Evaluation of a Video Extensometer in Young's Modulus Measurement in Tensile Testing

Source

To evaluate digital image correlation (DIC)–based video extensometers in small strain measurements, especially in Young's modulus measurement of metallic materials, we conducted tensile tests on two sheet materials, DP980 dual-phase steel and AA6022 aluminum alloy, using ASTM E08 standard specimens at nominal strain rates of 1.0 × 10–4/s, 1.0 × 10–3/s, and 1.0 × 10–2/s. During testing, a video extensometer was used simultaneously with a clip-on extensometer for strain measurements with a variety of data acquisition rates, up to 17 Hz for the video extensometer and up to 100 Hz for the clip-on extensometer. The slope of the linear region was determined according to ASTM E3076 to report Young's modulus for all tests, in addition to the maximum slope approach used in the testing machine software. For testing at a low strain rate (e.g., 1.0 × 10–4/s), a valid Young's modulus could in some cases be determined for both the clip-on and video extensometers even though certain fit quality metrics failed. However, it is interesting to note that for the video extensometer used, a valid Young's modulus can be obtained despite failing quality metrics, and a fit can pass all fitting quality metrics and still give an invalid Young's modulus. For testing at a high strain rate (e.g., 1.0 × 10–2/s), it was found that no valid Young's modulus could be obtained for the video extensometer, mainly due to insufficient digital resolution. This finding raises concerns about the performance of the video extensometer at small strains. The results indicated that higher relative noise exists in the video extensometer, which is aggravated further by its relatively low maximum sampling rate, limiting the maximum strain rate for which it may be effectively used.
