Grease Particle Detection and Quantification via Direct Imaging Evaluation

Source

The cleanliness of a lubricant has a significant effect on equipment reliability and life. ASTM D7918 was used in this study to evaluate different greases for particle concentration by direct imaging. The particulate was reported via software analysis in mg/g for particles > 10 µm, > 25 µm, and >80 µm. For this study different greases were evaluated to understand the effect solid additives, unique thickeners, and dark colors can have on particle evaluation and any difficulties or limitations that may be encountered during analysis with unique samples. The ability to evaluate and quantify particulate in grease can help improve lubricant production, reducing particulate being introduced into the equipment. In addition to being used as part of quality control this method can be used to evaluate used greases to evaluate the accumulation of wear. The analysis was enhanced by the software's ability to recognize and quantify specific particles. This can be helpful in identifying particles that are indicative of specific wear modes.
