Application of Resistance Curves to Crack at a Hole

Fracture tests have been conducted on center-cracked specimens, and specimens containing a short crack at a circular hole, made of the 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. The test results have shown that the center-cracked specimen exhibits elastic behavior, whereas the cracked hole specimens exhibit elastic-plastic behavior. The slow stable crack growth record of the center-cracked specimen was presented in the form of a K-based (elastic) resistance curve. However, J-based (plastic) resistance curves were constructed for the cracked hole specimens. Despite the differences in fracture behavior, it was demonstrated that the resistance curves for all those specimens are equivalent. Therefore, it is concluded that by using a J-based analysis, the fracture stress in a plastic regime can be predicted from a K-based (elastic) material baseline resistance curve.
