The Effect of Pour-Point Depressants on Diesel Fuel Performance in Winter


The effect of pour-depressant additives on the low-temperature filterability of diesel fuels has been studied in the laboratory with vehicle simulators. The benefits imparted by pour depressants depend upon both fuel-system design and fuel type. The most critical part of the diesel fuel feed system is the suction filter or screen. High-density cracked fuel appears to be more depressant responsive than all-virgin products. Pour-point depressants in these responsive fuels delay blocking of the suction filter by wax. In a well-designed system, depressants can extend the warm-up period sufficiently to permit continued operation; performance of the vehicle is extended well below the traditional cloud-point limit. By simple changes of fuel-system design, even further advantage can be taken of the flow-improving properties of pour-depressant additives.
