I. Purpose

Source

This manual deals with the design, analysis, and interpretation of interlaboratory studies of test methods. Its purpose is to provide technical committees with a specific statistical approach to the study of test methods and to discuss in detail the most important phases of this approach. This procedure is intended for use in a program to study the statistical aspects of a well-defined physical or chemical testing process or to compare the relative merits in this regard of two or more alternative methods. It is designed to extract from the data information that will help the committee to evaluate the precision of the method within a laboratory as well as on an interlaboratory scale; to furnish the basis for specific recommendations concerning the number of specimens to be tested and the need for reference samples; and to predict the improvement in precision that is likely to result from the use of reference samples. A secondary objective of the procedure is to obtain information on the most likely causes of aberrant results and thereby to lead to a better specification of the test method.
