The Effect of Cold Work, Thermal Treatment, and Neutron Irradiation on the Fracture Toughness of Zircaloy-2

Source

Neutron irradiation of annealed Zircaloy-2 in a 280 C pressurized water environment has been found to cause a considerable loss in fracture toughness. Generally, however, Zircaloy-2 is utilized in PWR systems in a cold worked condition. This paper supplements previous work by presenting the results of an experimental study of the fracture characteristics of cold-worked Zircaloy-2. The results are obtained from a parametric analysis of the temperature- and orientation-dependence of Kic as influenced by cold work, hot pressurized water, and neutron irradiation.
