Suggested Method for Penetration Test in Gravelly Soils

In the field of bridge design and construction, foundation pile lengths are always a most uncertain element. Many methods have been proposed and tried to predetermine these pile lengths but with uncertain results. Test piles driven in the initial phase of a construction job will not assure the lengths of all piles, and this commonly used procedure often results in delays to the contractor which are costly to the owner. Static vertical load tests on initial piles inform the owner and contractor only of the bearing capacity of the loaded pile and, furthermore, are no assurance that piles of similar length will provide the bearing capacity required for the balance of the foundation piling.
