Utility of Stereology for Quantitative Metallography

Metallographers typically characterize microstructure observed in two-dimensional (2D) metallographic sections through the three-dimensional (3D) material microstructure, although 3D microstructure governs material properties. Stereology utilizes statistics and stochastic geometry to relate important properties of 3D microstructure to the measurements that can be performed in 2D metallographic sections. Furthermore, stereology provides statistical techniques for unbiased sampling and characterization of microstructure observed in 2D metallographic sections. Consequently, stereology is a useful tool for metallographers. Two important stereological techniques that are useful for quantitative metallography are reviewed in this paper.
