Metallographic Preparation and Characterization of Thermal Barrier Coatings

Source

Characterization of thermal sprayed thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) continues to challenge metallographers due to the lack of standardized preparation and analysis methods. Despite the past literature on this topic, ASTM E04 has yet to include a preparation method specific for TBCs. The present study aims to bring this topic to the forefront and reinvigorate the standardization in this area of metallography. Each step of metallographic preparation will be discussed to highlight its importance in revealing the true microstructure of a TBC. Modern metallographic characterization techniques will be utilized to identify a preferred preparation method for adoption as standard practice.
