Earthquake Centrifuge Modeling Using a Laminar Box


A laminar box has been constructed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to permit accurate dynamic centrifuge testing of geotechnical and soil-structure models subjected to horizontal one-dimensional earthquake excitation at the base of a soil deposit. The container is designed for dry or saturated soil models and permits development of stresses and strains associated with one dimensional wave propagation. This container consists of up to 39 rectangular aluminum rings on roller bearings. The design philosophy and construction details are described. Results from a series of dynamic centrifuge tests on dry and saturated sand models are presented, and the desired one-dimensional response of the model is verified. A correction for the influence of lateral inertia of the container on the soil model response is developed.
