Estimation of Toughness Degradation by Microhardness and Small Punch Tests

Source

Microhardness and small punch (SP) tests were conducted to improve the reliability of evaluating the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) shift caused by aging (thermal aging, neutron irradiation, cold rolling) using several model alloys (Fe-0.15C alloys and 2¼Cr-1Mo steels). Although evaluation of DBTT by the SP test was good overall, intergranular brittleness could not be detected by SP-DBTT measurement only. By combining other measurements like fractographic observation, however, material degradation can be better evaluated.
