New Practice for Hazardous Area Electrical Equipment on International Ships

1. Scope

This practice is intended to increase awareness and approaches for the application of hazardous areas and electrical installation as associated with the use of IEC 60092-502:1999 as referenced by footnote within International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations as a standard recognized by IMO (that is, recognized standard).

The aim of this practice is to provide guidance and procedures for owners (or their representatives) and builders (shipyards and vendors) directly related to the inspection and maintenance of certified safe electrical equipment and systems installed within hazardous areas on ships or vessels subject to application of IEC 60092-502:1999.

This practice is not to be considered all-inclusive but rather highlights the application of IEC 60092-502:1999 to bring awareness to the industry.

Rationale

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations that refer to IEC 60092-502:1999 by footnote include, but are not limited to:
International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS),
International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk (IBC Code),
International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code),
International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-Flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), and
Code for the Transport and Handling of Hazardous and Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk on Offshore Support Vessels
(OSV CHEMICAL CODE).

Application of IEC 60092-502:1999 as referenced by footnote within IMO regulation is not a prescriptive requirement of IMO. Flag administrations may accept alternative recognized standards in lieu of IEC 60092-502:1999 or differ to standards recognized by flag administration or the AHJ as designated by the flag administration.

Recognized standards proposed to be used for a specific project are to be referenced for implementation of hazardous area installation requirement and acceptance by the flag administration.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
