Revision of C584-81(2016) Standard Test Method for Specular Gloss of Glazed Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products

Rationale

RE: ASTM Ballot C21(22-02) - Reapproval of C0584-1981(2016) Test Method for Specular Gloss of Glazed Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products WK83364
Reasons for Negative:
1.

Section 1 Scope
a. Per ASTM Blue Book of Form and Style: A5.3 Include in this section the system of units to be used in referee decisions.
b. Suggested Revision: Add section: “1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.” For reference, this section was added to ASTM D523 between the 1989 and 2014 versions of the standard.
2. Section 1.1
a. The justification for limiting the test method to the 60-degree geometry is unclear, especially with the inclusion of Note 1 stating “If a greater degree of distinction between bright glazed surfaces is desired, the 20-degree geometry instrument will provide it.” ASTM D523 allows for measurement by 20-, 60- or 85-degree geometry and provides instruction to guide the user for selection of the correct geometry.
b. Suggested Revision: Adopt 1. Scope and 4. Summary of Test Method sections from ASTM D523.
3. Section 5.1 Instrumental Components. “The apparatus shall consist of an incandescent light source…”.
a. The requirement of incandescent light is unnecessary and glossmeters that use this type of light may not be available.
b. In September 2022 a review of product sales literature, including 11 manufactures and 23 models of glossmeter, was completed. None of the 23 models of glossmeter identified the type of light used as an incandescent light source. 8 of 23 indicated an LED light source, 2 of 23 indicated use of D65 light, and 13 instruments did not reference the light source used by the device. c. Suggested Revision: “The apparatus shall consist of a light source…”. A similar revision was applied to Section 6.1 of ASTM D523 between the 1989 and 2014 versions of the standard.
