New Practice for Blast Testing

1. Scope

1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this practice is to define the practice by testing labs (arena and shocktube) for conducting blast tests. The end goal is to harmonize results between test facilities and maximize the consistency and repeatability of the results.
1.2 Objectives
Objectives guiding the development of this practice are to formalize standard practices for conducting open air blast tests for all applications and facilitate high quality, standardized results processing and reporting of test results.

Keywords

Blast Testing

Rationale

Arena blast testing used by government and industry to quantify the effects of explosion induced loading on structures are intended to mitigate the effects of intentional attacks and accidental explosions. Several facilities exist to provide blast testing services. The processes of the various facilities are similar but often lack consistency in details between test providers. The current Standard Practice is aimed at bringing more consistency (where practicable) to processes thereby allowing for more direct comparisons and interpretation of results from various tests and facilities.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
