Morphology of Phases in High-Temperature Alloys as Revealed by the Electron Microscope

Source

Structural studies of commercial superalloys with the electron microscope have resulted in many interesting correlations between the morphology of the phases precipitated and mechanical properties. Generally, these alloys are nickel-chromium base and are age hardened with various proportions of aluminum and titanium. Modifications on this basic composition usually involve substituting iron and cobalt for nickel, and sometimes smaller additions of elements such as columbium and molybdenum are made. The types of phases precipitated in these alloys after heat treatment and in service can be conveniently grouped into two categories based on their effect on mechanical properties. These are: (1) agehardening phases, and (2) other intermediate phases.
