Abstract

A test procedure for determining the fracture resistance of ductile metallic materials under stable crack growth conditions is described. The procedure consists of the determination of a Ja curve with particular emphasis on the near-initiation region. In our proposal, JIc is defined as the fracture resistance at 0.2-mm stable ductile tearing. It is determined by the intersection of the Ja curve with an intercept line which is parallel to and 0.2 mm off the blunting line. The blunting-line formula is improved by accounting for the strain hardening behavior of the material. A simple determination of the blunting-line equation is shown, and its applicability is checked using a broad range of materials.
