    Slurry Wall Performance Adjacent to Historic Church

    Abstract

    Underpinning and conventional sheeting and shoring using soldier beams and wood lagging was substituted with a slurry wall adjacent to a historic Washington, D.C. church. This church was badly damaged in 1970 due to ground movement from a building excavation to the west. Understandably there was concern regarding a proposed new excavation on the east side for an office building planned only a few metres away. The church hired consultants to review all design and construction measurement data independently. This paper presents the measurement data on the slurry wall from readings on slope inclinometers embedded in the wall, survey of surface points and observations on the church itself. Readings at the various stages of construction are shown. The work was completed without any significant movement or damage to the church.
