Revision of C1676/C1676M-23 Standard Specification for Microporous Thermal Insulation

Rationale

Currently no criteria are set forth in the standard to define the level of water repellency required for a material to be classified as Grade 2B,water repellant insulation. The change to the standard would incorporate criteria and testing in accordance with ASTM C1763, Standard Test Method for Water Absorption by Immersion of Thermal Insulation Materials, to establish a maximum level of water absorption allowed to classify a microporous insulation as Grade 2B, water repellant insulation. A previous ballot was submitted that used the industry term hydrophobic for the water repellant version. However, there was concern that the change was establishing a quantitative value for the term hydrophobic. Thus, this ballot uses the term water repellent which was indicated by the task group and prior voters to be more representative of the property being defined.
