Revision of C1019-20 Standard Test Method for Sampling and Testing Grout for Masonry

Rationale

In the current standard, the widths of all four faces of the specimen are measured and recorded, and the cross-sectional area is determined by averaging opposite faces and multiplying the averages. However, this can cause an issue as the user is required to remember which measurement goes with which face. Changing the calculation of the measurement to squaring the average of all four measurements simplifies the process and can prevent errors in calculation.

Additionally, C1019 specimens have a nominally square cross-section, so using the formula for calculating the area of a square in an appropriate choice.

Although specimens are not always perfectly square, there are requirements in place to make sure they are nominally square. This change in calculation, did not significantly alter the resulting compression strength of the specimen.
