Revision of D4054-23 Standard Practice for Evaluation of New Aviation Turbine Fuels and Fuel Additives

Rationale

Rationale for revision
ASTM D4054 was drafted primarily to enable the industry to evaluate and approve synthetic fuels. However the standard practice did include a number of paragraphs for the evaluation and approval of new additives. Effort was initiated to streamline and describe the type of testing required to evaluate the different types of additives (AO, MDA, SDA, CI/LI, and new additive / chemistry types). There was guidance given for each type of additive (AO, MDA, and SDA), however the specific process for evaluating CI/LI for “Performance for its Intended Function” was not described in the document. Instead D4054 relies on the existing U.S. Military process for this evaluation.

In the following, modified ballot item, language is proposed to help clarify the guidance based on desired end use of the proposed CI/LI additive (i.e. military only, civil only, or both).

This ballot was approved by the Subcommittee D02.J at the June 2022 meeting.
