New Practice for Characterization of Rigid Vinyl Recycled Content

1. Scope

1.1 This classification system standard specification covers rigid PVC and CPVC compounds derived from recyclate in extruded, molded, or calendared form composed of polyvinyl chloride, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride copolymers containing at least 80% polyvinyl chloride and the necessary compounding ingredients. The recycled materials shall be characterized to inform users of potential issues related to ingredient compatibility and safety, to avoid process contamination, and to help users select materials for a given performance requirement.
Note 1 – The list of compounding ingredients in the appendix is not meant to be an exhaustive list of allowable compound ingredients. In addition to the compounding ingredients listed, others may also be used. The list of compounding ingredients in the appendix does not imply that every ingredient listed is a required ingredient. Some materials may not contain all the ingredients listed in the appendix.
Note 2 - ASTM D883, Terminology, contains a definition for ’rigid’ compounds; the compound requires minimum tensile properties.

1.2 For applications involving nonrigid PVC and CPVC recycled content, a separate ASTM standard is being developed

Note 3 – ASTM D883, Terminology, defines a ‘flexible’ compound as ‘nonrigid’ with maximum tensile properties

1.3 The requirements in this classification system standard specification are intended for the quality control of recycled content compounds used to manufacture finished products. These attributes are based on a combination of declarations and evidence related to material sourcing and data obtained using standard test specimens tested under specified conditions. These attributes do not necessarily reflect the final attributes of the finished products. See the applicable ASTM standards for requirements for finished products.
1.4 The text of this classification system standard references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this specification
1.5 This standard uses SI units. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
Note 4 – There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard
1.6 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, section 9, of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use
Note 5 – This is standard ASTM Blue Book language
1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision of Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
