New Test Method for Additive Manufacturing - Feedstock Materials -- Tensile Testing Method for Filaments used in Material Extrusion

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of the tensile properties, specifically tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, of thermoplastic polymer–based filaments used as the feedstock in material extrusion-based additive manufacturing processes. The filaments include plastic filaments, continuous fiber reinforced composite filaments, and filaments with chopped fibers or fillers. The test method uses a fixture that allows the filament specimen to be wrapped and tested.

Keywords

Filament; Tensile testing; Composite

Rationale

Material extrusion based AM processes have been widely used. However, no standard is available for determining the tensile properties of the filaments used in those AM processes.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
