Revision of A706/A706M-22a Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Low-Alloy Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement

Rationale

Grade 100 bending of #14 and larger bar sizes is not advised both for building reasons and for safety reasons. On the building side, hooks bent into high strength large bars will tend to crush the concrete, resulting in injury to the structure. Heads are preferred over hooks in these scenarios. On the safety side, it takes quite a lot fo force to bend a grade 100 large bar. In the event of a break, quite a lot of harm can be done. For these reasons, the ballot item will remove the requirement bend #14 and larger bar grade 100 and make it a purchasing agreement item. In previous balloting, this change was not found objectionable. However, there was a conflict between mandatory and non-mandatory language.
