New Test Method for Compression Properties of Flexible Cellular Materials

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of compressive properties of flexible cellular materials during compressive loading and unloading at a uniform rate. This method is applicable to open or closed cell materials made from expanded synthetic or non-synthetic polymers.

Keywords

Compression Curve; Hysteresis; Hysteresis Curve

Rationale

OEMs are asking for compression curve data more often as engineers are using these curves to compare and identify materials to use in their applications. There is not a standard method for preparing compression curves and the associated data from them as current flexible cellular material methods only call for singe stress measurements at a specified strain. Foam producers are supplying curves to OEM’s but specimen dimensions, test speed and presentation of results are not consistent and may not provide good comparisons between products.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
