New Test Method for Dynamometer Evaluation of Unleaded Spark-Ignition Fuel for Intake Valve Deposit Formation

1. Scope

This test method covers an engine dynamometer test procedure for evaluation of intake valve deposit formation of unleaded spark-ignition engine fuels, using a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4 L in-line four-cylinder LE9 engine. This test method includes detailed information regarding the procedure, hardware, and operations.

Keywords

gasoline; deposit control additive; detergent; gasoline deposits

Rationale

The ASTM D5500 BMW 318i and ASTM D6201 Ford 2.3L tests for Intake Valve Deposits are facing challenges with available vehicle or engines for testing. This test method uses newer engine hardware and is expected to be adopted as an intake valve deposit test for EPA and CARB deposit control additive certifications.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
