As documented in Section 3.3 of ACI 544.4R-18, “Guide to Design with Fiber-Reinforced Concrete,” a notched beam can be used for determining the flexural performance of FRC in which crack width is measured and plotted vs. load. Currently, a European test (BS EN 14651) is used and cited. As more designers are using crack width as a design parameter for FRC, it is essential and useful to include a notched beam version as an alternative in ASTM C1609. The test will be conducted very similar to the current practice (four point bending and same beam size). The only difference would be saw-cutting a notch and using crack opening displacement (COD) to control the test and ultimately measuring the crack width vs. load. Due to the fracture mechanics of this test, the results are typically more consistent than the un-notched version
