Revision of D3241-23 Standard Test Method for Thermal Oxidation Stability of Aviation Turbine Fuels

Rationale

This ballot is being proposed to include the TO10 apparatus from AD Systems in Table 1 of D3241.
This equipment meets Table 2 critical operating characteristics.
An evaluation of the equivalence of the equipment by the breakpoint determination has been carried out using the test results from 11 samples tested on the new TO10 and one model of apparatus listed in D3241 Table 1.
This equivalence study involved examination of 22 breakpoint pairs from two laboratories (independent from the manufacturer) in Europe and USA.
A research report detailing the study and obtained results is attached.
The ballot was reapproved during the June 2023 ASTM D02.J03 meeting in Denver.

Ballot History: This is the second time this item has been balloted.
The first ballot (19-04) had received 9 negatives about following technical aspects:
- Insufficient number of breakpoint pairs for proper evaluation
- Discrepancy in the results reported by different labs / models of equipment
- Not described fuels matrices
- Missing technical information on the novel technology used in the TO10
Ballot was withdrawn.
The negatives have been addressed by redesigning the testing protocol by carrying testing on both sets of equipment (unique serial numbers) in two laboratories and minimizing test variables other than the equipment been compared. The research report contains detailed data on all the testing and analysis performed.
