The ASTM standard for cautionary labeling of portable fuel containers used for the transportation and storage of gasoline was first promulgated in 1983. Few substantive changes have been made since then, other than the merging of very similar standards for diesel and kerosene containers (ATSM F926). During the development of the Standards Council of Canada CSA B376:22 an extensive effort to update the cautionary labeling approach was undertaken. This revision to ASTM F839 is a parallel and largely similar result.
The ANSI Z535 series provides a comprehensive source of Standards relating to the design, application, and use of safety signs, colors, and symbols for a broad range of applications. The adoption of recognized symbols (ISO 7010 Graphical symbols) allowed some reduction to the textual information on the cautionary labeling panel. As a result the font size of the textual information can be increased to provide improved readability. The minimum font sizes are now specified, based on the cautionary labeling panel size.
