New Test Method for Dry Powder rCB Particle Size Analysis via Laser Diffraction

1. Scope

The scope of this work item is to develop a method characterizing the particle size of milled recovered carbon black (rCB) base char. The focus will be on designing a dry powder laser diffraction test method used to characterize milled rCB to enable manufacturers to optimize production processes and maintain product quality. The scope will be limited to the development and validation of a measurement method for virgin powder material. It is important to note, the particle size term denoted here is not related to the primary particle size term historically utilized for carbon black. Due to the heterogenous nature of rCB, the particle size term pertains to the size of rCB agglomerates resulting from a post-milling process and is not indicative of the primary particle size of the carbon black which exists in the material.

Keywords

particle size distribution; Static Light Scattering

Rationale

Post-milling of rCB base char is a critical process which influences application performance. As traditional techniques employed for carbon black particle sizing have been found to be an unreliable measure of application performance, a need exists for an alternative particle sizing approach to monitor a base char milling process. Although particle sizing techniques are currently being employed by rCB manufacturers, their use is currently limited due to the lack of test method standardization. The utilization of various techniques and testing conditions produces an inability for industry to have consistent quality parameters across different manufactures and prevents customers from making useful comparisons regarding product quality. The intended outcome is to establish a standardized procedure with implementation guidelines that can be adopted by manufacturers and customers to monitor product quality and predict product performance.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
