ASTM WK86954

Revision of A1035/A1035M-23 Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain, Low-Carbon, Chromium, Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement

Rationale

The maximum Silicon limit of 0.50% in specification A1035 was chosen arbitrarily by copying the limits of A706.
The maximum values of Manganese, Sulfur, and Phosphorus were also chosen using this same rationale.
Test results of steel produced to .75% Silicon have produced results that adhere to the requirements of ASTM A1035 mechanical and corrosion resistance properties.
The benefit is that higher silicon content of the steel greatly reduces the formation of chromium oxides in the casting process. The increase in maximum Silicon will allow A1035 producers to improve the quality of the steel.
