New Test Method for Determination of Rutting Resistance Using High Temperature Indirect Tensile (HT-IDT) Strength of Asphalt Mixtures

1. Scope

This test method covers the procedures for preparing, testing, and measuring asphalt mixture rutting resistance at high temperatures using cylindrical laboratory-prepared asphalt mix samples or pavement cores. The test method describes the determination of the high temperature indirect tensile (HT-IDT) strength. The HT-IDT strength can be used to evaluate the resistance of asphalt mixtures to rutting.

Rationale

The US is undergoing a major change in asphalt mixture specifications. The change is moving from Superpave materials volumetric design, control, and acceptance to end-result testing referred to as Balance Mix Design (BMD). Currently, agencies are using the Hamburg Wheel Tracker or Asphalt Pavement Analyzer for permanent deformation (rutting) evaluation of the mixture. These tests take several hours to run. While longer times are acceptable for the mix design phase, a faster test is needed for materials control and acceptance testing. HT-IDT is one option that can be used for acceptance testing.
