New Practice for Acoustic Emission of Gray Cast Iron Yankee Steam Heated Paper Dryers During Thermal Stresses Induced During Cool Down

1. Scope

1.1. This practice provides guidelines for carrying out acoustic emission (AE) examinations of Yankee and Steam Heated Tissue paper Dryers (SHPD) of the type to make tissue, paper, and paperboard products.
1.2. This practice requires that the dryer be heated up to the normal operating temperature prior to the data collection. The dryer is subject to significant stresses during the heating up and controlled cooling periods of operation and the procedure is covered by this document.
1.3. The AE measurements are used to detect, as well as localize emission sources. Other methods of nondestructive testing (NDT) may be used to verify and further evaluate the significance of the acoustic emission sources.

Keywords

Rationale

This is a new standard being proposed to cover the use of acoustic emission examination of Yankee and Steam Heated Tissue Paper Dryers during the cool down process.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
