Work Item
ASTM WK86620

Revision of A1008/A1008M-21a Standard Specification for Steel, Sheet, Cold-Rolled, Carbon, Structural, High-Strength Low-Alloy, High-Strength Low-Alloy with Improved Formability, Required Hardness, Solution Hardened, and Bake Hardenable

Rationale

This ballot item is in response to multiple inquiries in the industry expressing confusion and misinterpretation, associated with the titanium equation "Ti = the lesser of (3.4N + 1.5S) or 0.025%", specified in the formability grades Table 1 and structural grades Table 2. To address this issue, agreement was established at the Fall 2022 subcommittee meeting, to simplify the titanium requirement by specifying Ti = 0.025% maximum and delete the footnote specifying the titanium equation. This change serves to eliminate ambiguity and have no effect on the current practices established by steel producers in the industry. Note, this issue was previously balloted for ASTM A1011, and approved with no negatives or comments. To establish harmony, this issue is currently being balloted for ASTM A1008, A1018, and A1083.
