A312 Section 15.1 limits weld repair of long seam welds to NPS 6 and larger. The proposal is to lower the size range to include NPS 4, and to eliminate the restriction of .200" minimum thickness.. Welded NPS 4 pipe, and any diameter pipe of wall thicknesses less than .200", can be made by the same welding processes as NPS 6 and larger and wall thicknesses less than .200", and sometimes require weld repair, especially if 100% radiography of the weld seam is required. Historically, I am not aware of any technical justification to limit allowing weld repair to a minimum diameter pipe or wall thickness. ASME Section VIII Division 1 and ASME Section III do not place any limitation on pipe size that can be weld repaired.
