New Guide for Best Practices for Remote Interpreting
1. Scope
Interpreting in the United States covers a wide range of sectors and industries with a focus on language access. Virtual events and meetings have become much more common due to the changes brought on by the worldwide pandemic. This means that remote interpreting is not just an emergency measure but is now considered to be a long term option in certain circumstances. This[ standard guide] is intended to provide guidance to interpreters, presenters, organizers, and participants on the requirements and best practices for meetings or events that require language interpretation that are held partially or entirely online.

Rationale
TECHNOLOGY HAS RAPIDLY CHANGED IN THE LAST FEW YEARS MAKING REMOTE INTERPRETING MUCH MORE MAINSTREAM, HOWEVER, THE GUIDANCE HAS NOT KEPT UP WITH THESE CHANGES. PUBLIC AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN A STANDARD THAT WOULD ADDRESS PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS AND NEEDS. INTERPRETERS THEMSELVES HAVE EXPRESSED A NEED FOR A STANDARD THAT ADDRESSES THEIR PROFESSIONAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL WELLBEING. CURRENTLY, THERE IS NO GUIDANCE FOR PRIVATE-SECTOR LANGUAGE SERVICE PROVIDERS. NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING STAKEHOLDERS' INTERESTS IN LANGUAGE ACCESS WILL ALSO BENEFIT AND BE SAFEGUARDED BY THIS STANDARD.
