New Guide for Architectural and Structural Use of Glass

1. Scope

1.1. This standard guide specifies requirements to be followed in the design of architectural and structural use of glass in conditions that are not addressed in other standards.
1.2. This standard guide addresses elements related to glass only; other materials shall be referenced in corresponding standards for the chosen material. This standard guide includes performance, design, and behavior considerations. It addresses the characteristics unique to various glass products.
1.3. Loads, load durations, and deflection limit values shall be as required by the authority having jurisdiction.
1.4. This standard guide provides guidance on assessing glass components to maintain ongoing minimum performance levels. Specifically, this guide covers procedures for determining the static strength.
1.5. Designs developed in accordance with this guide utilize only the allowable stress design (ASD) method.
1.6. The criteria incorporated in this standard guide provides for normal and anticipated building uses.

Keywords

annealed glass, heat-strengthened glass; laminated glass; structural glass; tempered glass

Rationale

This document serves as a guide when designing architectural and structural use of glass. This document is intended to provide a starting point for designers to design glass. As several existing standards already address various specific uses of glass, this document will serve as a central reference to those cases and does not attempt to replace those. As the existing standards have varying theoretical basis, the procedures advanced here are intended to be generalized and not address all specific design considerations.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
