Revision of E112-13(2021) Standard Test Methods for Determining Average Grain Size
Rationale
The ambiguity in Annex A3 of E112-13
While working on a series of grain size issues which required referencing ASTM E112-13 Annex A3 I noticed what appears to be ambiguity in language and information between several sections. There is a simple way to approach the ambiguity and a more complicated way to deal with the differences which may be the best way in the long run.
The first way is to look at the three statements in A3.1.1, A3.2.1, and A.3.3.1, they are in order below.
A3.1.1 Because it is sometimes necessary to subject material to special treatments or techniques in order to develop certain grain characteristics prior to the estimation of grain size, the essential details of these treatments are set forth in the following sections.
A3.2.1 Ferritic Steels— Unless otherwise specified, prior-austenite grain size shall be established by one of the following procedures: (section A3.2 does not include the Saturated Picric Acid, surfactant, and HCl method and all of the methods in A3.2.1 are “Special treatments or techniques”)
A3.3.1 Ferritic Steels— For revealing prior-austenite grain size the following methods (see Note A3.1) are generally used: (section A3.3 does include the Saturated Picric Acid, surfactant, and HCl method)
