New Guide for Evaluating Impact Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics Used in Spacesuits and Spacesuit Gloves (Rotary Tumbler Method)

1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the determination of the impact abrasion resistance of textile fabrics and similar materials used in spacesuits and spacesuit gloves using a rotary tumbler.
1.1.1 Other procedures for measuring the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics are given in: Guides D3884 and D4158, and Test Methods D3885, D3886, D4157, and AATCC 93.

Keywords

Spacesuit gloves, spacesuits, human spaceflight, impact abrasion resistance

Rationale

Simulate wear and tear on textile fabrics and similar materials used in spacesuits due to interactions with lunar regolith at an accelerated rate using a rotary tumbler. Measure dust penetration and fabric degradation. Precondition the fabric for further testing.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
