New Test Method for Standard Test Method for Measuring the Insulation and Contact Temperatures Change of an Instrumented Hand in Glove Assemblies worn on Extravehicular Activities

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of the insulation value of a glove assembly. It describes the measurement of the resistance to dry heat transfer from a heated hand to extreme radiant and conductive environments within a vacuum.
1.1.1 This is a static test that provides a baseline glove assembly measurement on a stationary hand.
1.1.2 The effects of hand position and movement are not addressed in this test method.
1.2 This test method covers the determination of the contact temperature change at three locations on the hand when coming in contact with a thermally conditioned touch object. A range of pressure and contact time will be defined within this method
1.3 The insulation and temperature drop values obtained apply only to the particular glove assembly evaluated and to the specified environmental conditions of each test.

Keywords

insulative properties, spacesuit gloves, human spaceflight

Rationale

Measure the insulative properties of spacesuit gloves using an instrumented hand manikin in a cryogenic chamber. Measure contact temperature changes when interacting with objects at cryogenic temperatures.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
