New Guide for Fugitive Methane Emissions Measurement Process

1. Scope

This guideline covers the qualification of methane emissions quantification systems for gas distribution pipelines. These guidelines apply to both existing and developing technologies. The guideline will establish performance-based requirements and process for qualification.

Keywords

Gas leaks, pipeline, mid-stream, downstream

Rationale

Most Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) currently lack a standard test protocol to quantify and report fugitive methane emissions within their gas distribution environments. These LDCs need a standard practice for test validation utilizing methane detection instrumentation and reporting methane emissions to better facilitate the process for prioritizing pipe repair and/or replacement of these identified methane emission sources.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
