Revision of F2291-22a Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices

Rationale

The purpose of this ballot is to require the designer to analize the maximum allowable gaps in the fall protection barriers next to the walkways described in 14.8.3 (non-primary walkways).  Typically, these are areas that have limited access by the riders and/or patrons.  It is recognized that when the usage of these walkways is by workers performing preventative maintenance work, that the gap is acceptable at 12 inches (304mm) in it's least dimension.  However, if the walkway is a “reasonably forseeable” patron accessible area (evacautions), this gap must be analized and may be reduced based on the risk of smaller patrons.  The words “reasonably forseenable” has been used previously in F2291 in section 6.3.3 with regards to restraints and are used here again.  It is not the intent of this section to require narrow gaps around all amusement rides, but to have the designer of this fall protection system be aware of the increased risk involved of smaller patrons when around those areas and include mitigations in the design.
