Revision of C1202-22e1 Standard Test Method for Electrical Indication of Concrete’s Ability to Resist Chloride Ion Penetration

Rationale

The ASTM C1202 Standard Test Method for Electrical Indication of Concrete’s Ability to Resist Chloride Ion Penetration [1] has a current precision statement obtained through an interlaboratory study in 1990 [2]. That ILS was performed before the first standard test method was published in 1991, when there was not enough experience performing it. The current single operator and the multilaboratory coefficient of variations of a single determination were found to be 12.3% and 18.0%, respectively.
After analysis of report RR-C09-1004, some inconsistencies were observed. As a result, during the June 2019 ASTM meeting, the ASTM C09.66 subcommittee on Concrete’s Resistance to Fluid Penetration decided to organize an Interlaboratory Study (ILS) to determine the precision for several standard tests under the jurisdiction of ASTM C09.66. Since the lack of experience with the test at the time the current precision statement was determined could have led to the high current single operator and the multilaboratory coefficients of variation of a single determination, C09.66 decided to include ASTM C1202 in the ILS (ILS #1684).
This ballot intends to incorporate the results obtained in ILS #1684. The testing plan and data analysis for this study was based on ASTM Practice C802-14 and ASTM Practice C670-15. This ILS included four different testing equipment and fourteen laboratories.
