New Test Method for Heater Tube Rating Using the Ellipsometric Method

1. Scope

This test method covers the procedure for the ellipsometric rating of heater tubes produced by Test Method D3241.
1.2 The final result from this rating procedure is an absolute measurement of the deposit thickness on the heater tube that can provide a basis for judging the thermal oxidative stability of the fuel sample.
1.3 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization

Rationale

A ballot was approved during the December 2022 ASTM Subcommittee J03 meeting in Orlando FL, for the creation of individual methods for ASTM D3241 heater tube rating. A method for ellipsometric thickness deposit rating of heater tubes is proposed. The research report supporting this test method exists within ASTM International.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
