Revision of C926-22c Standard Specification for Application of Portland Cement-Based Plaster
Rationale
The existing language in A2.1.3 is problematic. The rationale for revision is threefold:
A. First, the current language does not make sense. As it is currently written, the word “or” suggests that edges of plaster panels on the interior of a building would need to be sealed. This ballot item clarifies the intent of A2.1.3 by clearly stating that the requirement for sealing and caulking applies only to exterior applications.
B. This ballot item is a part of a greater movement to clean up the language in the Design Considerations of the document. The term “Design Considerations” is subjective and confusing as to whether this was intended as mandatory requirements or advisory in nature. This revision clarifies that the language is mandatory and moves it to the body of the document.
C. This ballot item is also part of a greater movement to address climatological differences. The requirement to seal stucco edges is applicable to moist, humid, or marine environments to reduce the entry of water behind the plaster. Such a condition is of no concern in dry, arid regions and is therefore unnecessary. This ballot item removes overly burdensome requirements in regions of the world where the climate does not necessitate its use.
