Revision of A500/A500M-21a Standard Specification for Cold-Formed Welded and Seamless Carbon Steel Structural Tubing in Rounds and Shapes

Rationale

A500 currently only requires a Flattening Test on Round Tubing. Many Producers of material made to this standard already routinely perform some type of destructive weld test on Square, Rectangular, and other Tubular Shapes as well to ensure good ERW welds. There is already a similar set of requirements in A1110 and A847. The recommended change is to expand Section 10 to include requiring either a Flattening, Flaring, wedge crush test, or other destructive weld test on all Round, Square, Rectangular, and other Tubular Shapes produced to this standard. The word round is being removed from Section 10.2 since the flattening test described can be used on square, rectangular, or other shapes.
Grade A was removed from this standard in an earlier revision so a remaining reference to Grade A is being removed from Section 10.3.
On a separate issue and after some discussion at the Sub Committee and Task Group level, we are also recommending clarifying 4.1 regarding ordering information. The change will place the responsibility with the Purchaser to identify all requirements for the material at the time of order so that the Producer is aware of any unique and/or additional requirements before starting production. Only 4.1, 4.1.15, and Section 10 are being balloted to reflect these proposed changes. The rest of the standard has been provided for reference.
