New Test Method for Determination of THC Isomers in Hempseed Products Intended for Animal Feed and Ingredients by Gas Chromatography and Flame Ionization Detection

1. Scope

This test method covers the determination of THC isomers in animal feed and ingredients by gas chromatography (GC) and flame ionization detection (FID). This test method is applicable to hemp seed, hemp meal, hemp oil, as well as grains and other raw material food ingredients that may contain THC. The covered concentration range of analysis is THC from 10 ppm to 1% by mass. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (?9-THC) is the main THC isomer of interest but, if required, Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (?8-THC) and Delta-10-tetrahydrocannabinol (?10-THC) are determined also.

Keywords

Rationale

The content of THC, principally Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, in animal feeds and ingredients is of concern at levels lower than attainable by ASTM D8442. Therefore, a new standard for determination of THC isomers at levels from about 10 ppm to 1% by mass is needed in order to ensure the safety and viability of such products. It is envisioned that this method will be used for verification by producers, regulatory agencies and others to meet these needs. The USDA has asked for a GC method to be developed for this.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
