New Test Method for Finite Flash Point determination of Liquid Wastes by Modified Continuously Closed Cup (MCCCFP) Tester

1. Scope

This test method presents a procedure for a flash point test, within the range of –20 to 90 °C, of liquid wastes using a Modified Continuously Closed Cup (MCCCFP) Tester. These standard measures the ignitability properties of liquid wastes which may include secondary materials, off-specification products, and materials containing free liquids recovered during emergency response actions. Results from this test method may be used as part of a fire risk assessment of the material, but it is the responsibility of the user to perform any additional characterization needed for determination of storage, transport, treatment, or disposal per international, national, regional or local regulations

Keywords

dynamic flash point, continuously closed cup flash point, fire risk, liquid waste

Rationale

Conventional flash point methods do always show an open flame when a flash point is detected, and a test start temperature that is too high for a flash point test can cause an explosion and fire hazard.

This advanced method addresses these issues since a continuously closed cup flash point design is intrinsically safe since an open flame is never present during the test. This feature of a MCCFP based test is especially important for determining the flash point of many liquid wastes since the flash point of these materials is frequently unknown.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
