New Test Method for Determining the Particle and Inclusion size, and count in Nitinol products

1. Scope

This test method is used to determine the particle or inclusion size and the count per unit area (number of particles per mm2) using light microscopical images. Images generated by other devices, such as a scanning electron microscope, are not specifically addressed, but can be utilized if the system is calibrated in both x and y directions.

Keywords

Nitinol; Image Analysis; Second phase particles in nitinol

Rationale

Material Specification for Nitinol products specify different levels of purity or freedom from second phase particles and inclusions however there is no standard test method to evaluate the level of purity or freedom from second phase particles and inclusions. This test method outlines a repeatable standard process to use image analysis for such and evaluation. Both producers and users can use this test method for evaluating product.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
