Revision of F2291-22a Standard Practice for Design of Amusement Rides and Devices

Rationale

In recent years, there has been an increase of attractions implementing various head-worn accessories, including VR/AR head mounted displays that are placed on the faces of guests for prolonged periods of times. Studies have demonstrated that headsets subjected to extended use are colonized by high levels of bacterial contaminants, some of which can cause serious infections. Without proper disinfecting techniques, VR/AR headsets can pose a potential health hazard for their users. A standard is needed to ensure the spread of these bacteria is limited. To accomplish this, it is important for the manufacturer of these types of attractions to provide products that have the ability to be cleaned and disinfected and also important for the owner/operator to ensure that when these accessories are shared between guests, approved hygiene procedures are implemented.
