Revision of D7566-22 Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons

Rationale

As part of an on-going effort to improve D7566 cleanliness information, D02.J0.05 - Fuel Cleanliness continues to evaluate ways to determine that fuels meet expectations of users. As discussed during the June 29, 2022 Subcommittee J meeting, Section 05 was presented a progress update regarding usage of ASTM D8148 Standard Test Method for Spectroscopic Determination of Haze in Fuels. Also discussed was the successful completion of ILS-1726 that enabled full precision estimates for repeatability (r) and Intermediate Precision (Between Operator / Apparatus Repeatability), also known in D02.J0 as reproducibility, single site. (Research Report D02-2028 is attached for voter convenience.)
In 2020, D4176 - Test Method for Free Water and Particulate Contamination in Distillate Fuels (Visual Inspection Procedures) was revised to allow D8148 as a non-mandatory supplement to D4176’s procedure 2 and if available the reporting of D8148 results.

References as to how D8148 may be used in a non-mandatory way already exist in Appendix X.1 subsection X1.12.3. The proposed revision clarifies the optional D8148 usage opportunity. The inclusion of references to D8148 in the non-mandatory appendix are provided for additional insight for users of the D7566 Standard and not proposed to be utilized to determine if a fuel meets the mandatory requirements.
